Oil Tester

Oil has long been recognized as being an efficient coolant with a high flash point and high electric strength when used as an insulating medium in transformers, switchgear and other electrical apparatus. It is critical, however to maintain the oil properly to avoid weakening of the insulation properties.

The electrical properties of the oil can change with degradation due to oxidation, acids, sludge, gas and water absorption. These changes can be identified through a dielectric strength test. Megger Oil Test Sets are designed specifically to determine the dielectric strength of insulation oils. The range of Megger Oil Test Sets offer solutions for all oil testing applications.

The Megger OTS 60PB Portable Oil Test Set is a fully automatic oil test set that reduces the operator's tasks of preparing and loading the oil sample into the test chamber and initiating the required test sequence.

On completion, the mean breakdown value of tests in the sequence is given and the value for each individual test may be recalled. Standard deviation calculations are automatically carried out and displayed when specified by the test standard.

Maximum test voltage for the test set is 60 kV. The test set is microprocessor- controlled. Test sequences for many national and international standards are programmed into the test set memory.

The parameters programmed into the test set include stand times, stir times, rate-of-rise of applied voltage and number of tests. A five-minute test sequence is available for rapid assessment of the condition of the oil sample.

The OTS60SX is a lightweight, semi-automatic, oil dielectric strength test set. The instrument is suitable for field use and is powered from a range of line voltages. The maximum 60 kV output allows tests to be performed on oil from a wide variety of electrical installations including transformers, circuit breakers and other equipment.

Over 20 years experience has led to the development of the Megger KF875 and KF-LAB MkII Coulometric Karl Fischer Test Sets designed to determine moisture in oil, to provide highly accurate results on-site. The KF875 and KF-LAB MkII are highly portable instruments, complete with integral printer and carrying case, are easy to use and provide highly accurate results.

Optimized for testing insulating oils with a specific gravity of 0.875, the Megger KF875 simply requires the operator to press one button and inject a 1ml sample into the test cell. The simple ‘one touch’ operation makes the KF875 so easy to use that it requires no specialist knowledge or training to use it effectively. Results are presented on the instrument display and on the integral printer in both micrograms of water and in milligrams per kilogram (parts per million, ppm).

The KF-LAB MkII allows the titration of samples with a range of specific gravities from 0.60 to 1.40 and also permits the use of different sample sizes. The KF-LAB MkII also has a default setting optimized for analyzing insulating oils with an SG of 0.875. This means it can be used to measure water content in a variety of different materials but is also easy to set up for transformer insulating oils.

Automatic Oil Test Sets

The OTS60AF/2, OTS80AF/2 and OTS100AF/2 are automatic oil dielectric strength test sets with maximum test voltages of 60 kV, 80 kV and 100 kV, respectively. To operate, the user only has to load the sample in the test vessel and select the required test. Timed and dated results can be printed or downloaded via an RS-232 interface
